The cartwheel
A mini world undisturbed
I’m thinking of when I was different
and why I love that girl
Thinking of the yard the deer the curl
of the grass and the sanctuary there
the skin and hair of the earth itself
She sees an oasis of rosewater
and calls it a spirit in her brain
instead of something else
On the endless road steady as the rain
The devil says
You’ll get everything you want and still feel the pain
You’re just the fool who took the bait
But if I think of me now and not of how I came
Not my little girl waiting in vain
knowing
She’s tossing and turning in our bed at home
hoping beyond hope
that she'll be able to explain
